Sandra Müller (b. 1977)
Germany
Sandra Müller began making collages fot two reasons: her fascination
with paper and that it was the cheapest way to express herself. “I’m
addicted to antique papers, cabinet photos and everything old. “
Right now she works as a social worker and as a “self made mixed media artist”. She has not been influenced by any special artists but says that she is inspired by everything. When asked what qualities she finds in collage, she says: “A collage has to rip into my heart. That’s it!” Sandra Muller also works with assemblage: “I love boxes, working with found objects. Sometimes I sew or solder. Most of the time I use vintage and old things like paper, wooden tiles, photos and other tiny bric-a-brac. But the most important part of all of my works are the quotes. No artwork without little quotes or something calligraphed by me. “
She has a leaning towards melancholy and burdensome
themes which can be found in almost each of her collages. “Sometimes
I keep a special photo, cut out, sketch of my calligraphy, paper, playing
card, calendar sheet or embellishment for several months. It’s magical
how the single components find themselves when it’s about time for
the perfect theme. My hands are only a medium. Most of the time I’m
really fast in creating a collage. When I start I have no idea what i
decided to express in the beginning. It’s always fascinating to
see how things turn out in the end.”
